I am booked in for Femurs with Dr. Betz in a month - in the consultation we had a discussion regarding IT band release. I know there has been a bit of a discussion on here regarding whether or not IT band cut is a good idea.
Betz now offers IT B cut as part of the surgery but they still recommend a soft release instead, to allow for immediate mobilisation, and then suggested a second release at the 8cm mark if IT band tightness is not able to be resolved by stretching through the lengthening process. Curious what people's thoughts are/past experiences it seems the trade-of for getting IT B cut is destabilisation of the hip initially and therefore a longer timeline before being able to walk again, while the soft release will be insufficient if lengthening past a certain point e.g. 8cm+

why exactly so many surgeons against ITB release while Paley does it as default?

Betz is a brilliant man, and an experienced surgeon.
He has probably got far better knowledge than i do on this, but as a layman, i would say i have observed the following:
A lot of Betz patients on here are doing phenomenally well, despite small challenges. However, many of them who have had the soft ITB release have still complained it isn't enough. A lot of them still have the same problems i.e. stiffness/duck ass/wide legs, despite having excellent results overall.
Now , did they give you an option of a proper ITB release to begin with?

yes, of course. majority of them limp a lot as far as i see. I even saw a patient of Betz on Cyborg4Life channel, who has looking for another surgeon to get ITB release.
Do you mean even with ITB release? Or did they go for a soft release? I personally would , as you had been offered so, go for the full ITB release by Dr Betz, and not the soft one.

By the way, exciting your surgery is soon, i wish you every success! Betz has a phenomenal team around him.
When you were measured, did you find you measured 1-2cm less than normal?
On a stadiometer, measured chin down, i measure at 174 -174.5cm, 12 hours after waking up (Almost always 174.5)
However, when being measured pre-consultation, stadiometer firmly placed on my head, and for some reason comparable times of being awake etc, i measured 173cm - a height i never measure at.
Was wondering what your experience was
A soft IT band release seems to mean that they hash cut the band. But is a full release when they just cut it completely?? I have no idea. Fully cutting the IT band doesnt sound like a good idea if thats the case but I cant imagine thats what they do.
IT band release should be done on all femoral lengthening patients. period.
it does not destabilize the hip, not the knee, and it regrows by distraction histiogenesis.
Beta’s patients just end up going all over the world for their IT band tenotomy.
Doctor Betz is offering ITB release now. He is a phenomenal surgeon, a good man, but i am still puzzled why many who have the ITB release seem to be going to get it done again?

Thanks! excited as well - kind of feels surreal as I have been wanting to do this for a very long time.
I haven't been measured by Dr Betz team yet - that will be in a few more weeks. I have seen 1-2 cm discrepancy when my doctor measured me at 169.5cm instead of 171cm - it's a mixture of measuring device/technique and time of day. I think it simply varies a bit from device to device and how they read the measurement (i.e. above the line or just below) - it doesn't really matter other than psychologically at the end of the day - it's a very small difference.
So the question I am left with is - soft release (hash the band) or ITB cut. Again to be clear Dr. Betz (well actually I spoke to Dr. Axel) suggested that the soft release was better as I could be mobilised immediately where a "hard" release/cut would lead to longer recovery. His thinking is to do the soft release (hash the band) and then based on my progress and tightness, they would do a second soft release around the 8cm mark if necessary.
