I'm considering femur lengthening surgery and I'm concerned about the recovery time. How long until I can resume full weight-bearing activities safely? I've heard it can take up to a year, but I'm hoping for a more precise answer.

Honestly, the recovery was tougher than I expected. The first few weeks were brutal, and I had to rely on pain meds to get through the day. But after about 3-4 months, I started to feel like myself again. I paid around $20k for the procedure, and it was worth it for me, but everyone's experience is different.

I'm not sure it's worth the risk of non-union or infection. I've read that the complication rate is around 15-30%, and that's pretty scary. Has anyone else had a bad experience with femur lengthening surgery?

Physiological Mechanisms of Distraction Osteogenesis

From my deep dive into the literature and consultations with orthopedic specialists, it's clear that distraction osteogenesis is a complex process involving callus formation, osteotomy, and distraction osteogenesis. The consolidation phase is critical, with a consolidation index of around 30-40 days/cm. I've found that intramedullary nail lengthening can reduce the risk of complications and promote earlier weight-bearing.

  • Precice and Stryde nails have been shown to have lower complication rates compared to external fixation.
  • Fixator-assisted nailing is another approach that combines the benefits of internal and external fixation.

I agree with @stryde_veteran, the recovery was tough, but it was worth it for me. I had a Precice nail and was able to start weight-bearing after about 2 months. I'm now 6 months post-op and feeling great.

@sarah_m, I understand your concerns, but I've had a great experience with femur lengthening surgery. My doctor was very experienced, and I followed the rehab protocol to the letter. I've had no major complications and am now back to playing sports.
