It's something I really want to avoid if possible. The image of something inside my urethra makes me cringe (it must be painful).
Is it mandatory to use a catheter during surgery?
I didn't use one.
LL is 10* more painful, a q-tip in your peehole is the least of your worries.
In the US and europe they'll make you use one. The anesthesia can make it hard to pee and you'll end up retaining urine and not be able to pee it out. Then they'll have to put one in while youre AWAKE. Once it's in it doesn't hurt pulling it out may be uncomfortable. Like Jcay said it's the least of your worries.
I know it's not the worst part of doing ll. It is just a psychological fear I have.
Some doctors use a tube inside the ass to make an enema

Impossible. Nothing enters in my ass.
The entire catheter situation still haunts me, lol. I remember it well.

You are not making it better for me...

either you take it from the front or take it from the back, but you have to take it
I didnt have to use one in Singapore. I was like you. The LL experience wasnt too bad, but the bonus point is not to have something entering my dck =)) Peeing after surgery would be a bit tough in the first 1,2 days though. I had my family members to help me to do it. If you are all by yourself, you would need help from the nurses. Not easy to pee in front of a stranger I can guarantee you that
