Hey everyone, I'm considering tibia lengthening surgery and I was wondering if it's possible to minimize visible scars? I've heard that some techniques are better than others when it comes to reducing scarring. Can anyone share their experience or knowledge on this topic?

I've been through the process and I can tell you that the scars are definitely noticeable, but they do fade over time. I had the PRECICE nail implanted and the incision was about 2 inches long. The doctor told me that the scar would be around 1-2 cm after it healed, but it's actually a bit longer. Still, it's not too bad and I'm happy with the results. The pain was worth it for the extra height I gained!

I'm not sure if I'm ready for this kind of surgery. I've read about all the possible complications, like non-union and nerve damage. And what about the cost? I've heard it can range from $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the technique and location. Is it really worth the risk and expense?

Minimizing Visible Scars after Tibia Lengthening Surgery: A Review of the Literature. From my extensive research, it appears that the Ilizarov circular external fixator is still the most common technique used for tibia lengthening, but it can result in more noticeable scarring due to multiple pin sites. On the other hand, intramedullary limb-lengthening nails (LON) like PRECICE and STRYDE offer a more minimally invasive approach with smaller incisions and potentially less scarring.

I agree with @StrydeSurvivor, the scars do fade over time and the results are worth it. I've had the STRYDE nail for 6 months now and I've already noticed a significant improvement in my height and overall confidence.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! @BoneExpert3000, your post was really informative and helpful. I'm still considering my options, but I think I'm leaning towards the LON technique. Can anyone recommend a good surgeon or clinic that specializes in tibia lengthening?

I'm still not convinced that the benefits outweigh the risks. @TibiaTitan, have you considered the potential long-term effects of this surgery? What if you experience complications or need revision surgery?

Addressing Concerns about Long-Term Effects and Complications. While it's true that tibia lengthening surgery carries risks and potential complications, the vast majority of patients experience satisfactory outcomes with minimal long-term effects. According to the literature, the bone healing index (BHI) is a critical factor in determining the success of the procedure, with values ranging from 30-45 days/cm.
