Hi everyone, I'm considering limb lengthening surgery in Turkey and I wanted to know if 8cm gains are achievable with the new techniques like PRECICE or STRYDE. Has anyone had experience with these methods?

I've had the STRYDE nail for 6 months now, and I can tell you the experience has been challenging. The first 3 months were the toughest - I had to deal with a lot of pain and discomfort, but my doctor was great and helped me through it. I've gained about 5cm so far, and I'm hoping to get another 2-3cm in the next few months.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for this kind of surgery. I've read about the risks of non-union, infection, and nerve damage. Has anyone had any major complications from limb lengthening surgery? Is it really worth the risk?

Distraction Osteogenesis: A Review of the Literature

Distraction osteogenesis is a complex process that involves the gradual distraction of the osteotomy site, stimulating osteogenesis and neovascularisation through Ilizarov's tension-stress principle. The rate of distraction is crucial, with 0.5-1mm/day being the optimal range for most patients. Various methods are available, including external fixation, LON, and magnetically-driven intramedullary nails like PRECICE and STRYDE. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of technique should be tailored to the individual patient's needs and goals.

  • PRECICE: The lengthening index for PRECICE is approximately 18-22 days/cm, with a consolidation rate of 95-98%. The risk of infection is lower compared to external fixation.
  • STRYDE: The lengthening index for STRYDE is approximately 20-23 days/cm, with a consolidation rate of 94-97%. However, STRYDE has a higher mechanical failure rate compared to PRECICE.

It is essential to carefully weigh the benefits and risks of each method and discuss them with a qualified orthopedic surgeon to determine the best course of treatment.

@HeightHopeful, I agree with @FemurFan23 that the STRYDE nail is a great option. I've had it for a year now, and I've gained 7cm. The key is to be patient and follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
