Hey guys, nowadays Ive really been preparing myself for my LL journey in 2021 and I've been weighing my options of LON femur vs Stryde femurs.

I've really been researching alot these days as I feel like I should be fully informed before I make a life changing decision such as this.
Here's my thought process so far on this:

LON
Pros:
●I can get 15k much quicker potentially allowing to begin as early as June 2021, saving me time.
●Saves me alot more money, the additional money can be redistributed to my investments making me more wealthy in the long term.
●Steel internal nails that makes me feel less "squeemish" ( compared to stretched out Stryde nails).
Ive seen some of the Stryde pics and posts and its a hit or miss for some of the users in terms of comfort. For someone slightly OCD like me, Id rather get the LON over and done with for 3 months and comfortably remain with fixed steel nails for 1.5 years.

Cons
●LON not as comfortable during distraction.
recovery perhaps slower( even though technically I can start 3-4 months EARLIER which is way more enough time I feel.
●LON scars ( cosmetic surgery only an extra $1k which I can pay for, so overall cheaper still).

Stryde
Pros:
●Faster recovery during distraction (but I may start upto 4  months later, so was it worth it?
●fully weight bearing

Cons
●stretched out internal nail, could trigger my OCD regardless if its harmless or not, making the 1.5 years consolidation annoying AF
●expensive
●makes me wait many more months to get the surgery, possibly all the way upto November 2021.

So that was my honest thought process about this comparison, what do you guys think in your opinion?

What did you read about Stryde being uncomfortable in the consolidation phase?  I think those complaints can probably apply to a fixed nail as well, other than you OCD symptoms about STryde being stretched out.

External frames are fully weight bearing, so that's a pro for both.

Well I read Movie's diary and eventually towards the end he kept repeating his pains was from the Stryde nail and he couldn't wait to get it out of his system and he definitely mentioned he felt it in his femur sometimes; not painful but he still felt it.

Which makes me think since the steel nail of the LON is much smaller in size and not so "stretched out", I would feel it less and subsequently be less paranoid and OCDish about it, if that makes sense.

I noticed the fixed nail in my leg.  I don't think Movie's problem was caused by the diameter of the Stryde nail or the lengthening mechanism.

Hi Tokito,

My opinion...

is that it will be worth waiting 4-6 months to use the Stryde method.  Stryde is by far the most comfortable, safest and gives you the best chance to recover fast and well.   A Stryde patient that has surgery in December 2021, will be completed with their recovery before a LON patient that had surgery started in August 2021.

I recommend Stryde for you if 4-6 months is the primary difference.   Make sure your doctor is experienced at this surgery, visits with you regularly, and that you have a consistent and daily physical therapy regiment.   You're going to be 3 inches taller soon, friend. Go Stryde if you can afford it.

All the Best,

IFS

Hey InfullStryde,

Essentially what you arebsaying that if there were 2 people; person A does LON femur and gets a 4 month headstart, person B does Stryde femur 4 months later, person B would still recover first? Are you sure? That would be quite a significant difference in recovery.

I recommend Stryde as well. The worst part of lengthening for me so far is not being able to sleep consistently, and I can sleep in pretty much any position I want. I can't imagine how much harder it would be to sleep with externals limiting your positions and also being uncomfortable.

Unless you're very concerned about scarring, I don't think internal tibial lengthening is worth the cost. If you only want one lengthening, save up for internal femurs or just do LON tibias and be done with it. If you want both, do tibias first with LON and then save up for internal femur.

My opinion.

LON femurs?
With what lengthening device? Probably monorails as ilizarov is almost impossible on femurs.
So, except from less money LON on femurs is terribly harder and much more risky than Stryde.
Monorails is not weightbearing at all which means that you'll be on your bed for months (being there done that) which will cause muscle loss and much harder rehabilitation.
Also, having both internals and externals at the same time could lead to major deep bone infections more probable than externals or internals only.
Finally, having fixators on femurs for months is at least barbaric.

For all these reasons anything else than internals only is a big no for femurs.
And the best by far nail to do internals is stryde.
So about your question, the only answer is stryde.
Otherwise, do externals only on tibias or even LON there. But not on femurs.

Hey Tokito,

I second getting Stryde, I think get it with Giotikas or Parihar and tell us how it goes in a diary

Hope this helps
