Considering limb lengthening surgery and concerned about scars. Has anyone tried massage therapy to reduce scar tissue after surgery?

Had limb lengthening surgery 5 years ago. Scars are still visible but have faded. Did physical therapy to regain strength and mobility.

Not sure about massage therapy for scar tissue. Concerned about potential risks like non-union or delayed healing.

Physiological Mechanisms of Distraction Osteogenesis

Distraction osteogenesis involves the complex process of new bone formation. Research indicates that BMP-2 and BMP-7 can accelerate bone formation in animal models. However, the application of these findings to human limb lengthening surgery requires careful consideration of the evidence and potential risks.

  • A study by Li et al. (2002) demonstrated the potential of BMPs in enhancing bone formation in a rabbit model.
  • Autologous bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells have shown promise in enhancing bone regenerate quality, as seen in the work by Đỗ Tiến Dũng (2011).

Agree with @FemurFan42 on physical therapy. Has anyone used a stationary bike or elliptical trainer for rehab?

Work as a physical therapist with limb lengthening patients. Early rehab is key. Thanks, @BoneGeek3000, for insights on distraction osteogenesis and scar tissue formation.
